Tony is a friend in Sheffield, he is as old the hills and been round the block too many times. I loved meeting up with Tony when I lived in Sheffield, he would tell tall tales of his time working in BBC in the sixties, and taught me more than I needed to know as explored the ‘Scene’ in the 80’s and 90’s. In many ways Tony was mentor, my guide, and someone who was there, because he had been there.
The stories of outrageous Queens infiltrating straight society, the cat fights in the wig department, the actors and actresses seen in various states of undress, all were the staple diet of a Friday night, often lapsing into the little Polari that I knew, that I had learned, we would talk. I was young, the most oft used word was ‘trade’
