Art and politics are great enemies, politics cannot comprehend the truly intrusive and pervading power of art, it cannot understand creativity in a profession that is all too often destructive. One can malign political parties, and politicians as we have seen this past week, but ‘Art’ is somehow indestructible.
The Third Reich held a show of ‘degenerative art’ in Berlin in the 30’s – it was art from Jews, Impressionists, and all the art that stood against the regime the show was, very embarrassingly, a sell out! So in Russia performance artists Pussy Riot has set itself up against the Russian State – and the State cannot understand it, it is impotent to defy it. Russia, it seems has seriously miscalculated the power of the Pussy Riot. Arrested, without charge, for flash mobbing a Russian Orthodox Church, the international artistic community has come to their aid – Putin is not getting away with this one. The State has produced a 2,800 page report outlining their crimes, well a flash mob in a Cathedral which should have taken a page at most.
The song was ‘Virgin Mary Chase out Putin’
A 2,800 page report, even if you are using crayons and joined up writing, sounds like a show trial we had in then UK in the 1500’s – we would charge someone with every heinous crime we could think of and then add padding to make it sound really awful, using really big words so no-one actually knew what the crime was; even pro-Putin artists are aghast at the severity of the charges. The Russian Orthodox Church still claims messages from God, again making it sound like an Elizabethan, the first one not the current incumbent using that name, show trial.
After the hearing it was announced that the members of Pussy Riot have gone on hunger strike. Increasingly an authoritarian Russian State is sounding more desperate, well they are not because they don’t care about public opinion it appears.
The three members of the Pussy Riot have been given less than a week to prepare their defence, Moscow is showing it does not want Justice, it wants revenge for challenging Putin. Its has the feel and smell of the imprisonment of Yulia Tymoshenko, the former Ukrainian Prime Minister – it has nothing to do with Justice, it is naked revenge.
Remember Pussy Riots, political victims in a so-called democracy.
Art will always win, because it cannot be corrupted.
