The victory of the socialist President Hollande and then a few weeks later of the Assemble Nationale marked not only a sea change in the politics of the European Union, but also the a complete re-positioning of French society, it seems to me that the new Government in France has been as radical as the 1947 Attlee Government – having socialists in charge of the second largest economy in Europe is fairly significant.
Within a few months of taking office the French Government has reduced the Cabinet wage Bill by 20%, laid plans to legalise Gay Marriage, and pledged the money from International Transaction Tax to b e channelled to Africa, and they have abolished ministerial cars. In a few months the President of France and the Assemble Nationale have marked their territory. Whilst Hollande is a Technocrat he is also not comfortable in the Elyse Palace, and the pomp that surrounds the Presidency. His first function as President was to honour the war dead, he stood in the pouring rain, refusing to use a unmbrella, a few days later on a visit to Angela Merkel he had to be guided, very gently, on where he should stand – how refreshing to see a politician ill at ease with the trapping of power.
Can you imagine Cameron being uncomfortable at a civic function? His photo-op stunt when travelling to the Olympic Games was just that, a staged stunt to meet President Hollande, trying to score some ‘man of the people’ brownie points really looks cheap, I would prefer some real action.
We have to ask why Cameron did not cut Cabinet Pay but just froze it, he has cut Public Sector Workers pay by around 14% in real terms, and why will it take Cameron and Clegg 5 years to introduce Equal Marriage, surely if the French can do, we can? I also note that there are not howls of protest over Equal Marriage in Paris, but we are British. Cameron is not a socialist, he is tory and he knows nothing, just the catchphrase all in this together, in the words of Bevan
The Tories always hold the view that the state is an apparatus for the protection of the swag of the property owners… Christ drove the money changers out of the temple, but you inscribe their title-deed on the altar cloth.
Hollande is proving that Cameron’s words are merely that, words. Cameron has nothing to offer but soundbites, and fatuous phrases to live our lives by, he is all style but no substance.
The Prime Minister has an absolute genius for putting flamboyant labels on empty luggage ~ Bevan
Cameron famously snubbed President Hollande on a visit to London during Hollande’s election campaign, later Cameron has to give Hollande the ‘Red Carpet’ treatment, quoting protocol that should not meet someone seeking to be elected into high office, though he managed to meet Mitt Romney the US Presidential hopeful.
Hollande doesn’t seem to like Cameron much, I can understand why, his retorts are way too sharp for Cameron to reply to. during the meeting on the second of Olympics Hollander reportedly made these remarks:
Alluding to the French failed bid to host the Olympics against the British and Cameron’s promise, made good, to roll out the Red Carpet Hollande commented:
The British have rolled out the red carpet for the French to win medals, I thank them very much for that but the competition is not over.
I really hope he is making these up on the spur, which I think he his, he seems a sharp cookie!
We need to reclaim our Government, politics is about ideology or social experiments, it is about the people; GOvernments should be answerable to us, not the people to the Government.
