I cannot help but wonder if David Cameron should give up eating cheese at bedtime, or he stop going on the all night benders and partying like it’s 1999 (I am he must hanker after his Bullingdon Club Days) which the craziness of his ideas suggest he must be doing.
The latest stupendous ideas ‘just call me Dave‘ has is about reducing the number of Bank Holidays, or get paid less, because that would make us more efficient – it works really well as a soundbite, or a headline for the Daily Express to run, but the facts do not match with reality. If Bank Holidays make us more inefficient than lets scrap the Diamond Jubilee celebrations – we can’ afford the loss of earnings!
In 2011 we were told that the Royal Wedding would boost the economy, and then a few months afterwards we were told by the selfsame Government that the reason we went didn’t achieve the growth they predicted was because of the Royal Wedding – which is it Dave, you really have to be consistent in your arguments, do Bank Holidays make us more efficient or less efficient?
Firstly if we look at German growth rates, which has more Bank Holidays than the UK, the predicted growth rate is a very healthy 2.9% whilst the UK with less Bank Holidays is lucky to see 0.9% – and whilst we are on the subject Germany has comprehensive Health & Safety Legislation which Cameron has been talking about revising as they make the UK uncompetitive, so the facts are not really matching reality. It could be that Bank Holidays are really good for us because they give us quality time (I hasten to add I am working over the Easter Bank Holiday, so no vested interest!) with friends and family, and they give us something to aim for. If we are going to scrap Bank Holidays where do we stop, Dave?
What is next, unpaid holidays, unpaid sick leave?
This Conservative Government – and lets face for all the guffaw the LibDems are just the bag carriers for this administrations and just keep it in power – is intent of changing not the face of British society, and not the face of politics, it is perhaps the fascist like regime that I have lived under, and I have lived under Thatcher and that is saying a lot. Cameron is intent on creating a some kind of utopian Downton Abbey theme park that is in thrall to capital as opposed to working with capital for the benefit of the people – lets face it Cameron is become the head of the Downton Abbey Government.
Scheme by scheme this government is selling this Nation – the roads, the railways, the Health Service, Social Security and the Workers, it is creating a servile people who daren’t think of better things, or care; we will be expected to doff our caps as the gentry walk by and know or place, the perfect Dickensian society, well it would be perfect if it wasn’t for the fact must of us will be the underclass.
Do we really want to go back to Edwardian England – I think not – but that is where this Government is taking us.
